How Many Deaths Happen On The Inca Trail Each Year?
Whilst we usually think of the immersive cultural experience and beautiful scenery that we will see along the Inca Trail, there are always some questions regarding incidents and mortality rates along the trail.
Whilst mostly asked with curiosity, we can also learn some important reminders for how to stay safe when hiking this route.
In this guide we will find out how many deaths occur on the Inca Trail each year, including the reasons for these. We’ll also share some advice on how to stay safe during your own hike here.
How Many Deaths Happen On The Inca Trail Each Year?
Quick Answer: Overall there are no fixed numbers for annual deaths, given these are very rare to occur on the Inca Trail.
In recent times, there have been as few as 10 recorded deaths of tourists, although there have also been incidents related to Porters too. It’s important to note that these are just deaths related to the Inca Trail, and not those that have happened at Machu Picchu.
Why And How Did These Deaths On The Inca Trail Happen?
The main causes were environmental, including being caught in a landslide as well as falling off the trail. However these are mostly avoidable, especially when going with a knowledgeable local guide who knows the route well and plans in advance for any trickier sections of the route (especially during the wet season from December until the end of January).
The other reason was due to cardiovascular problems, which usually is due to pre-existing medical conditions. Given this hike is demanding (and at altitude), you’ll want to prepare properly before arriving in Cusco for your hike.
Here at ABExpeditions we use the very best porters and local guides from the region, who have many years experience leading groups along the Inca Trail. They will also talk through all safety procedures with you before and during the hike, so you can be reassured that you will be in good hands along the route.
How To Stay Safe On The Inca Trail
Staying safe on the Inca Trail is broken down into two factors; good preparation and following your guide’s advice during the route.
Before your trek it’s a good idea to follow a structured fitness plan so you are in ideal condition before arriving. It’s also worth investing in good equipment too, such as hiking boots, clothes and poles. Once you arrive in Cusco, you’ll want to acclimate to the altitude before heading on the Inca Trail. We recommend spending at least two days here in Cusco before, as well as trying similar altitude hikes (such as to the Cristo Blanco statue in the city).
Once you embark on your adventure along the Inca Trail, you’ll always want to listen carefully to your guide. There are parts of the trail where accidents can happen (usually slippery surfaces, although there are steep drops too), and your guide will let you know how to safely navigate these parts. Other advice you’ll receive includes what to do if you encounter wild animals, and also to walk at a comfortable pace.
