Condor  Canyon Chonta – 1 Day Tour Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Killarumiyuc – Tarahuasi – Chonta – Condor Canyon – Cusco. 

We will begin our journey with a pick-up from your hotel at 7:00 a.m., setting off towards the Condor Canyon of Chonta. Our drive will last approximately one hour until we reach Ancahuasi, where we will explore the archaeological site of Killarumiyoc, which translates to “The Moonstone.” Following this, we will continue driving for an additional 30 to 40 minutes to Tarahuasi, where our guide will lead us through the Tarawasi archaeological site. Afterward, we will drive for about 45 minutes to the town of Chonta, where we will pause for lunch. Once refreshed, we will embark on a hiking adventure to the Condor Canyon viewpoint, which takes approximately one hour and thirty minutes. The terrain is mostly flat, characteristic of the Peruvian landscape, with a gentle downhill slope towards the end of the hike. During this hike, keep an eye out, as you may witness majestic condors soaring overhead. After enjoying the spectacular views of the condors, as well as the Apurimac Canyon and river, we will return by hiking back the same route, which also takes around one hour and thirty minutes. Finally, we will board a van to return to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., depending on traffic conditions.

• Tips: Tipping is entirely optional. If you feel satisfied with the service provided by the guide and driver, you may choose to offer a gratuity as a gesture of appreciation. However, this is not mandatory.

What To Bring For Condor Canyon Chonta 

• Binoculars: Recommended for spotting condors and enjoying panoramic views at a closer range.
• 1.5 Liters of Water: Staying hydrated is essential, especially during physical activity at high altitudes. We recommend carrying at least 1.5 liters of water for the duration of the hike.
• Mosquito Repellent: As soon as we begin walking and approach the canyon, you will encounter many mosquitoes.
• Personal Snacks: While we provide light snacks, we suggest bringing additional food if you tend to eat frequently—for example, energy bars or trail mix.
• Pillow for the Van Ride: For your comfort, you may bring a small pillow. You can leave it in the van during the hike.
• Trekking Shoes: We strongly recommend wearing trekking shoes. The trail to the canyon is dusty and can become slippery in rainy conditions.
• Waterproof Pants (Optional): These are advisable during the rainy season (December to March), when precipitation can be heavy.
• Extra Clothes (Optional): In the rainy season, hikers often get wet. Bringing a change of clothes can help you stay dry and comfortable afterward.
• Lip Balm with Sunscreen: The sun can be intense at high altitudes. A lip balm with SPF will protect your lips from sunburn.
• Rain Jacket: Weather patterns are increasingly unpredictable due to climate change. It is possible to experience rain even during the dry season.

• Trekking Pants: We recommend trekking pants for your comfort and suitability for hiking. However, other durable and breathable pants are also acceptable.
• Rain Poncho: It is highly advisable to carry a rain poncho, particularly during the rainy season. Even if you are planning to visit the Condor Canyon during the dry season, it is recommended to bring one if the weather appears cloudy the day before your trip
• Wide-Brimmed Sun Hat: The trail passes through largely open areas with minimal tree cover. A sun hat will provide essential protection from the sun.
• Sunscreen: The sun in the Andes is particularly strong. Please bring and apply high-SPF sunscreen to exposed skin.
• Reusable Water Bottle or Camelbak: We encourage the use of reusable containers for hydration, such as water bottles or camelbaks, for environmental reasons and convenience.
• Sunglasses: The sunlight at high elevations is intense and may cause eye strain or discomfort. Sunglasses are highly recommended.

Useful Informations 

• Condors typically emerge to fly during the morning and afternoon, taking advantage of the warm air currents. However, based on our experience, the chances of spotting condors are significantly better in the afternoon. We used to organize tours both in the morning and afternoon, but on several occasions, no condors were seen during the morning outings. As a result, we decided to discontinue the morning tours and now operate only in the afternoon to maximize the likelihood of observing these magnificent birds.
• This tour is not solely focused on observing condors. Since the area is located within a canyon, you will have the opportunity to see various species of birds and native plants. Additionally, you will enjoy breathtaking landscapes, including views of the majestic Salkantay Glacier and the impressive canyon carved by the Apurímac River.
• You will encounter many mosquitoes during the hike because the area is a canyon. Therefore, we highly recommend bringing mosquito repellent.
• You will pass through the town of Chonta, where you will observe the way of life of people living in this remote area.
• You do not need to acclimate to the altitude before visiting the Condor Canyon, as it is located at approximately the same altitude as the city of Cusco. Therefore, if you are already comfortable in Cusco, you should not experience any altitude-related issues in the Chonta area.

Condor canyon Weather

The Condor Canyon of Chonta is located at approximately the same altitude as Cusco, around 3,400 meters above sea level. The area is open and exposed, which means that during the day it can be warm, while in the afternoon the temperature tends to drop and it can become quite cold. Additionally, windy conditions are common, as we will not be entering the valley itself but instead observing the condors from the upper part of the canyon. For this reason, we highly recommend dressing in layers and being prepared for both warm and cold weather conditions.

Cancellations And Refunds

• Full Refund: Cancellations submitted at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time of the Condor Canyon tour are eligible for a full refund, minus any transaction fees charged by the credit card processing company.
• Partial Refund: Cancellations made within 24 hours of the tour but before 7:00 PM on the day prior to the Humantay Lake tour will receive a 50% refund.
• No Refund: Cancellations made after 7:00 PM on the day before the tour will not be eligible for any refund.

Group Tour

When you join our Condor Canyon of Chonta day trip as part of a group, please understand that people may walk at different speeds. Some may walk faster, and others more slowly. Our guide will do their best to support everyone, no matter their fitness level or hiking experience, so that each person can enjoy the walk at a pace that feels comfortable. However, small differences in walking speed are normal. We kindly ask all participants to be patient and work together to help make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Strike And Demonstration

In the Cusco region, strikes happen often. Sometimes, during a strike, roads can be blocked with trees and rocks. If the strike is very serious and affects your trip to the canyon, we will have to cancel the tour. In that case, we will give you a full refund for everything.

In the vast majority of cases, our groups have been fortunate to witness these magnificent birds—sometimes from a close vantage point and other times from a distance. However, there was one rare occasion when no condors were sighted, and the reason remains uncertain. Such instances are uncommon, but it is important to understand that condor sightings are subject to natural conditions, which can be unpredictable.

How difficult is the hike to Condor Canyon?

We consider it to be easy to moderate in difficulty, as the trail does not involve any long or steep ascents or descents.

I suffer from motion sickness. How is the drive to the destination?

The driving route shares approximately 60% of the same path as the road to Humantay Lake. Please note that some sections of the road are winding and include several curves. Therefore, we recommend bringing motion sickness medication to ensure a more comfortable journey

Is It Possible To Modify My Trip After It Has Been Confirmed?

Yes, changing your departure date is possible. However, we kindly ask that you notify us at least 48 hours in advance to make the necessary arrangements.

Do I Need to Bring My Original Passport on the Chonta Tour?

It is not mandatory to bring your original passport for the Chonta Tour. A photocopy of your passport will be sufficient.

Can I Stay in the Sacred Valley for My Condor Canyon Trip?

It is not recommended to stay in the Sacred Valley for this tour, as our Condor Canyon group departures begin from Cusco. If you prefer to be picked up from the Sacred Valley, we can arrange this through a private service for an additional fee of $30 USD. Similarly, if you wish to return to the Sacred Valley after the tour, an extra $30 USD will apply for the return transport. For convenience and to avoid extra charges, we suggest staying in Cusco the night before the tour.

What About The Outstanding Balance?

The outstanding balance can be paid in cash (in USD or Peruvian soles) one day before your trip at our office, located at Calle Marquez 250, second floor, Office 3. Alternatively, you may choose to pay by credit card; please note that a 5% service fee applies for card payments.

The hike to the Condor Canyon takes approximately 40 minutes one way, making the round-trip hike about 1 hour and 20 minutes in total. Once at the viewpoint, visitors typically spend between 1 to 2 hours — and sometimes even up to 3 hours — waiting for the opportunity to observe the majestic condors in flight. After your time at the viewpoint, the return hike takes another 40 minutes.

Altogether, the entire excursion generally lasts around 5 hours, although the total duration may vary depending on how long it takes to spot the condors.

Is The Hike To The Canyon Difficult?

The hike to the Condor Canyon is considered easy to moderate. It is not a long trek, and there are no particularly steep or challenging sections along the way.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To Visit The Chonta Canyon?

The best time to visit Chonta Canyon is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, you have a much higher chance of spotting Andean condors as the weather conditions are generally more favorable. While it is still possible to visit during the rainy season, sightings of condors can be rare, as they tend not to appear in heavy rain. Additionally, fog is more common during this time and may obscure the canyon, making it difficult to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes.

Whats Is The Diffence Between The Chonta Canyon And Colca Canyon?

The main difference between Chonta Canyon and Colca Canyon lies in the level of physical activity required and the overall experience. In Chonta Canyon, visitors must complete a hike to reach the condor viewpoint, while in Colca Canyon, the viewpoint is located just a short two-minute walk from where you disembark the vehicle.

In terms of crowds, Chonta Canyon is significantly less visited, offering a quieter and more intimate experience. This is mainly because it is not as well known among tourists. In contrast, Colca Canyon tends to be much more crowded, especially during peak hours.

Another key difference is the number of viewpoints. Colca Canyon features several well-established viewpoints, whereas Chonta Canyon offers fewer. Additionally, the Chonta area is rich in vegetation, which attracts a diverse variety of birds. On the other hand, Colca Canyon is a much drier region with less greenery.

Travel logistics also vary between the two. Visiting Colca Canyon from Arequipa requires a longer drive and a very early morning departure. Meanwhile, the Chonta Canyon tour allows for a later start and a shorter drive from Cusco.
