Apacheta Pass 1 Day Hike In Ausangate

Apacheta Pass is a newly opened route in the Ausangate area that can be completed in just one day. It is an excellent option for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, away from the more crowded trails. The main destination of this route is Apacheta Pass itself, a well-known viewpoint where most visitors stop to take the iconic photograph of the Ausangate landscape. In the past, this classic view was mainly accessible to those completing multi-day Ausangate treks, but it is now possible to reach it on a single-day hike.

Apacheta Pass 1 Day Hike Overview

Throughout your Apacheta 1 day hike, you will hike through dramatic high-Andean valleys with magnificent views of snow-capped peaks, spotting llamas and alpacas grazing in the wild, and witnessing the towering Ausangate Glacier in the distance. On the final stretch, you’ll reach Apacheta Pass (4,900 m), a natural viewpoint offering 360° panoramic scenery that feels like standing on another planet—raw, powerful, and unforgettable.

Don’t miss the chance to experience the sacred Apacheta pass with AB Expeditions—and enjoy the mountain in peace, away from the crowds.

Why Hike with Us?

  • Trusted by Travelers Worldwide: AB Expeditions is recognized for reliability, safety, and authentic experiences. Check our reviews on TripAdvisor to see why travelers choose us for their Peruvian adventures.
  • Back to Cusco by Early Afternoon: We return to Cusco around 4:00 PM, giving you flexibility to rest, explore the city, or even catch a same-day flight if your schedule allows.
  • Protecting the Andes: We actively support environmental care in the Ausangate region, organizing clean-up initiatives and promoting responsible tourism. When you travel with us, you help preserve this sacred landscape for future generations.

Apacheta Pass 1 Day Hike Itinerary

Your adventure begins with an early pickup at 3:00 AM directly from your hotel in Cusco. From there, you will travel in a comfortable private vehicle to the starting point of the trek. After a scenic drive of approximately three hours along high Andean roads, we will arrive at the village of Alqatari, located at 4,400 meters above sea level (14,435 ft), where you will be welcomed by fresh mountain air and breathtaking landscapes. Upon stepping out of the vehicle, our team will provide you with a specially prepared box lunch to enjoy as breakfast and fuel up for the trail ahead.

Once ready, we will begin the hike, which involves a gradual ascent of about three hours toward the heart of the Andes. Along the way, you will see the vibrant red mountains, as well as llamas, alpacas, and local people wearing their traditional clothing. The trail will lead us to Apacheta Pass (4,900 meters above sea level / 16,075 ft), a natural viewpoint that serves as the highlight of the day. From this vantage point, your efforts are rewarded with stunning panoramic views: the majestic silhouette of the snow-capped Ausangate rises above blue lakes below, accompanied by spectacular vistas of the surrounding valley. We will spend between 30 minutes and one hour at this location, adjusting the time according to weather conditions and the group’s comfort, allowing you to fully appreciate, photograph, and connect with the grandeur of the landscape.

After taking in the views, we will begin our descent back to the starting point, a hike of approximately two hours along trails that offer different perspectives of the Andean landscape. Upon arrival, our vehicle will be waiting to transport us to the town of Cusipata. There, we will enjoy a traditional regional lunch, providing a perfect opportunity to recharge and experience local cuisine and culture firsthand.

After lunch, we will begin our journey back to Cusco, arriving in the early afternoon (around 4:00 PM). You will be dropped off directly at your hotel, bringing this one-day tour to a comfortable and memorable close.

What to pack – Apacheta Pass 1 day

Essentials

  • Passport: Bring your original passport or a clear photocopy. Required for identification and emergency records.
  • Water (1–1.5 liters total): We provide 500 ml of water, but we recommend bringing an additional reusable bottle or hydration bladder to stay well-hydrated at high altitude.
  • Small backpack (20–30 L): A comfortable daypack to carry your water, snacks, layers, and personal items during the hike.
  • Extra cash (small bills): Useful for purchasing local snacks, drinks, or souvenirs in Cusipata, or for tipping guides and drivers. Cash in Peruvian soles is preferred.

Footwear & Clothing

  • Trekking shoes or sturdy hiking boots: The trail includes uneven, rocky, and potentially slippery sections. Proper footwear with good grip is essential for safety and comfort.
  • Moisture-wicking socks (plus a spare pair): Thick or wool socks help keep feet warm and dry. A spare pair is useful in case of rain or sweat.
  • Trekking pants or comfortable hiking trousers: Flexible, quick-dry pants are ideal. Avoid jeans, as they retain moisture and can become heavy if wet.
  • Long-sleeve base layer: Protects against sun exposure and helps regulate body temperature during temperature changes.
  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or down jacket): Mornings and high-altitude sections (up to 4,900 m / 16,075 ft) can be very cold, even on sunny days.
  • Windproof and waterproof outer layer: A rain jacket or shell is recommended year-round—Andean weather can change quickly. Waterproof pants are optional but useful during rainy season (December–March).
  • Warm hat (wool or fleece) + gloves: Essential for warmth at Apacheta Pass, where wind and cold can be intense.
  • Sun hat with brim or cap: The sun is strong at high altitude. A brimmed hat helps protect your face and neck.

Sun & Weather Protection

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+): UV radiation is intense above 4,000 m. Apply generously to exposed skin before and during the hike.
  • Lip balm with SPF: Prevents chapping from dry, cold mountain air.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection: Essential to protect eyes from strong sunlight and potential glare from snow or rocks.
  • Neck gaiter or buff (optional but recommended): Adds extra warmth for your neck and face in windy or cold conditions.

Extras & Personal Items

  • Camera or smartphone: Capture the stunning views of Ausangate and the Andean landscape. Don’t forget extra memory or battery!
  • Portable power bank: Cold temperatures drain phone batteries faster. A small charger ensures your device stays powered.
  • Basic personal medications: Include any prescription meds, plus optional items like ibuprofen for headaches or altitude relief tablets (consult your doctor before use).
  • Light snacks (optional): We provide snacks, but if you have specific dietary needs or prefer frequent energy boosts, bring your favorite energy bars or nuts.
  • Rain poncho (optional): Useful during rainy season (December–March) or if clouds appear unexpectedly.
