Is It Worth Visiting Peru In October?

Quick Answer: October is a very special month to visit Peru for many reasons, which includes the perfect mix of great weather, authenticity and less tourists crowds.

At the tail-end of the dry season, we can still expect blue skies in the Andes regions when hiking – and especially so during the first couple of weeks. Whilst light rainfall usually begins during this month, it’s often at the end of the month. During October, Lima and the coastal regions begin to warm up, making it great to explore city highlights and nearby ruins like those of Caral and Pachacamac. The Amazon will still be wet of course, but the rain is still light compared to the month of November and onwards.

Peru in October is also a perfect month to explore the country’s highlights without hectic tourist crowds around. This includes hiking the four day Inca Trail and witnessing Machu Picchu – both of which will feel more authentic as they are generally quieter. Other top destinations to make the most of during this quieter time include Rainbow Mountain, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon and the beaches around Piura.

Important Things To Know:

  • October starts to experience light rains in various regions, however mostly at the end of the month.
  • A shoulder season month, we can see much less crowds when compared with September for Peru.
  • Temperatures are warmer, and more comfortable around the Andes and Coastal regions.

The Pros Of Visiting Peru In October:

  • It is arguably the best month of the year for seeing sites like Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain (for the mix of great weather and minimal crowds)
  • The heavy rains which start in November haven’t yet arrived, so it’s a good month for getting outdoors and hiking.
  • Crowds fall sharply by the end of September throughout Peru, so there will be less queues and crowds.

The Cons Of Visiting Peru In October:

  • There are virtually no drawbacks of visiting Peru in October!

Everything You Need To Know About Visiting Peru In October

Below we’ll now explore what Peru in October is like. This includes what the weather will be like, the best things to do during this month as well as a solid Peru packing list for October.

Best Things To Do In Peru In October

October is a really fantastic month to explore everything that Peru has to offer. The weather is at its warmest whilst minimal rainfall still occurs, so it’s perfect for hiking the Inca Trail and seeing iconic lagoons around Cusco, or for visiting beach towns like Paracas and Pimentel. Whilst rain will still be present year-round in the Amazon Jungle, October is not as heavy so land mammals remain easier to spot.

Another great thing to do when visiting Peru in October is making the most of the low tourist season. Crowds began to reduce in late September, but here in October they are pretty low. This makes it great for visiting usually-busy wonders such as Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain without massive crowds around.

The Weather Of Peru In October

Another shoulder season month for Peru, October has arguably the best weather of any month for a trip throughout the country!

Temperatures continue to keep rising since the recent winter in July and August, which are best felt in the Andes where evening lows aren’t as chilly as they can get. For the Pacific Coast, this makes October the first proper month where we can begin lounging out on the beaches (of course apart from those in Piura which are ideal year-round). Lima is also pleasant to walk around in, where there will be less grey skies like there were in previous months.

When it comes to rainfall, things are a little different as we make our way into October. The first couple of weeks are usually still quite dry (although there are sometimes light patchy showers – especially around the Andes), so this makes it the best time to head on a trip around Peru. As we reach the end of the month rainfall begins to get heavier in both the Amazon Jungle and Andes Mountains, so keep this in mind when planning your trip and deciding what to pack. Speaking of which…

Packing List For Peru In October

One of the most crucial parts of planning your trip around Peru is deciding what to bring with you. This is because this month marks a shift in weather patterns, and also as they can be very different depending on the regions you will visit.

If you’re planning a trip around all of Peru, then you’re going to need both light layers and thicker layers, as well as a warm coast for the Andes. It’s also a good idea to bring a poncho or light raincoat as October does mark the beginning of showers. Below we’ll share an ideal starting point for getting together your own Peru packing list.

  • Thin layers (such as Shorts and T-Shirts).
  • Swimming trunks / Bikini.
  • A warm coat.
  • A poncho (light showers can occur in early weeks, and sometimes heavier showers at the end of October).
  • Thick layers (several jumpers and a coat).
  • Comfortable hiking boots for treks.
  • A baseball cap or Andean hat (to protect your head from the harsh sun).
  • A hand towel.
  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from harsh sun and glare.
  • High SPF sunscreen (we suggest using a minimum of SPF 30 when hiking, and also in the coastal and Amazon regions).
  • Be sure to bring a thick hat, scarf, and gloves for Andean hikes.
  • Insect Repellent (for the Amazon Jungle regions).
  • A reusable water bottle.
  • A day pack to hold everything you need during your treks and day trips.
  • A quality camera or mobile phone.
  • Medication for personal use.
  • Padlocks which you can use for your bags when on longer treks or on public transport.
  • Charging adaptors and power banks
  • Extra batteries for your camera.

A Breakdown Of Peruvian Regions In October

Are you still wondering what each particular destination will be like in October? Although we can’t cover them all in just one post (there’s hundreds throughout Peru), below we’ll explore the main destinations and what to expect with each.

The Coastal Regions

During October the temperatures along the Pacific Coast really begin to warm up, marking the first real month that it’s viable to head to the beaches around Lima and near Paracas. The very best include Punta Hermosa, San Bartolo and Punta Negra – all of which are just a 1 hour ride away from Lima. Areas further north such as Chiclayo and Trujillo are even warmer as we make our way closer to the Equator, and the beach towns of Piura (like Mancora and Punta Sal) offer the very hottest beach and sea temperatures. Whilst Lima was mostly covered by grey skies between May and September, during October the infamous “gargua“‘effect begins to lift. This means we can expect more blue skies and beautiful sunsets whilst also exploring the different parts of the city. Rainfall along the coastal regions in October remains very sparse.

The Andes Regions

Moving inland from the coast, we next reach the towering Andes region – which is known locally as “La Sierra” here in Peru. Here we’ll find everything from charming mountain towns, ancient Inca Ruins and the Sacred Valley region to high altitude blue lagoons and snowy mountains. Given temperatures start warming up around Peru in October, we can expect more comfortable hiking conditions compared with earlier winter months. This is especially true on the higher-altitude treks of Ausangate and Salkantay, which get very cold at night given they are close to 5000m above sea-level. Most importantly for the Andes, is that the rainy season has yet to arrive. Whilst some showers can be expected deep into the month, the first two weeks of October are some of the best of the year for visiting destinations like Cusco and Huaraz!

The Amazon Jungle Regions

We have already seen that October brings many advantages for a visit to both the coastal and Andes regions, and it’s no different when here in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. Temperatures remain fairly consistent and pleasantly hot like the last few months, which is good as we avoid the even hotter temperatures that arrive later in the year during the rainy season. Whilst rainfall is frequent year-round throughout popular jungle regions like those around Iquitos and Tambopata, October is the last real “dry season” month before heavier rains arrive in November. This, along with the fact that Peru is much less touristy in October, means that it’s a perfect time to head on Amazon Jungle treks to see rare land-based animals such as the elusive Jaguar.

Our Top Tips For Visiting Peru In October

Without a doubt, October is one of the very best months to visit all of Peru, and it’s for this reason that we highly recommend spending at least a couple of weeks on your trip here. This will give you plenty of time to explore the ruins and culture of Cusco, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, enjoy the beach towns of Huanchaco and Máncora, visit Lima and also spot exotic wildlife in the Amazon Jungle. Remember that even though we can easily fly between destinations with a short flight time, adequate time is needed to see many of these epic highlights!

Given we are in a shoulder season month, it’s important to know the main differences between a visit during the first two weeks and the last two weeks (especially for October). Overall the first two weeks of the month are best as there will be few crowds, hardly any rainfall and great temperatures for getting outdoors. Whilst the latter two weeks are also crowd-free and warm, showers become more frequent as we enter the start of the rainy season.

If you plan on visiting multiple areas of the country (which you definitely should try and do), then it’s important to make sure you have prepared properly. Earlier in this guide we have covered a comprehensive packing list, however just to recap you’ll want warm coats and thick jumpers for the Andes, sunscreen and mosquito repellent for the jungle as well as light layers for the coastal and Amazon regions. In case you forget something remember that you can easily buy extras within local markets in all major (and lesser-known) Peruvian destinations.

Overview Of Visiting Peru In October

And that’s all for this guide to visiting Peru in October.

Arguably one of the best months of the entire year to visit Peru, October is perfect both for ideal weather and lower tourist crowds.
