Machu Picchu News and Updates

On May 12th, 2026, the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, through Resolution No. 306-2025-MC, released 500 additional Machu Picchu tickets per day for visits starting from May 12th onward. These tickets are available only for Circuit 3 (Route 3B). The tickets become available 48 hours before the visit date.
On January 16, 2026, through Resolution No. 000317-2025, the authorities announced that Route 3A (Huayna Picchu Mountain), Route 3C (the Great Cavern), and Route 3D (Huchuy Picchu) will be closed for the entire month of June 2026 for maintenance and conservation purposes.
On May 28th, 2025: The route to Machu Picchu Mountain has officially reopened following the completion of the repair work in the landslide area.
On April 28th, 2025: The route to Huayna Picchu has been officially reopened following nearly two months of restoration work due to landslides.
On April 25th, 2025: The closure of Machu Picchu Mountain is extended until May 28th.
April 08th, 2025. The Cusco Culture Directorate has extended the temporary closure of Route 3-A (Huayna Picchu) until April 27, 2025, due to ongoing restoration work on newly uncovered Inca walls. The route will reopen on April 28. Additionally, Routes 3-C (Great Cavern) and 3-D (Huchuy Picchu) will be closed from April 17 to 20, 2025, as they are connected to the Huayna Picchu Visitor Route.
March 08th, 2025: Access to Machu Picchu Mountain is currently closed due to landslides, and this restriction will remain in place until further notice to ensure the safety of visitors. However, it is important to note that Machu Picchu Citadel remains open to tourists, allowing them to continue exploring the renowned archaeological site and experience its historical and cultural significance.
March 05th, 2025: Huayna Picchu Mountain is currently closed until further notice due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall, which have affected approximately 15 meters of the trail. Professional personnel are assessing the area to determine the extent of the damage and will proceed with the necessary repairs as soon as possible to ensure the safety of visitors.
On February 2, 2025, a landslide occurred on the route to Machu Picchu at kilometer 103, causing a 4-hour delay for the train traveling between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes in both directions.

We had a very enjoyable experience with the guides from the first day exploring the Sacred Valley before we started hiking, right through the challenging Inca Trail. Ricky, Jijo, Raoul, Elias and Felipe were all very observant and there for whatever we needed. We all felt that we were in very good hands and they created a great atmosphere for the group of 34 of us. The chefs were also amazing and provided us with five star meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner! Huge thanks to them all!

We had the BEST, most EPIC trip with Raul (our guide) and Daniel (our chef). Raul is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and simply fun to hike with up to the incredible Machu Picchu. The trip was so well planned, everything ran smoothly and pleasantly, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Daniel waited for us halfway up the trail with the most amazing meal, truly hard to describe. The meals were spectacular, the hotel was great, and the organization of the train, bus, and entrance tickets was excellent. I would highly recommend AB Expeditions to anyone considering a trip, look no further. You’ll be in responsible, responsive, kind, professional, and overall wonderful hands.

Hi, I am Domin, Belgium and I went with a group of 34 people on November 10 for 4 days with AB Expeditions on the Inca trail. What a unique experience, the guides, cooks, helpers and pallbearers were like an excellent team. We hiked the classic 4-day, 3-night Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with AB Expeditions, and honestly, the entire journey—from the moment we booked online, through the pre-trek briefing, and of course, the actual trek—was truly outstanding. Even before we left, every single pre-trek question we had was answered quickly and professionally. We decided to add the Huayna Picchu hike and upgraded to the Vistadome train for the return, and each time we reached out, the service was warm, efficient, and very informative. They even promptly handled our email questions about acclimatization and how many days to spend in Cusco, which really made us feel fully prepared. During the pre-trek briefing, we met our guide, Yiyo. He clearly and thoroughly walked us through the itinerary and what to expect.

Our experience with AB Expeditions was simply exceptional. Our guide Jacob was perfect throughout: he explained every detail clearly, helped us whenever we needed him and accompanied us throughout the tour. Besides, he is a very polite person, very friendly, and we really enjoyed his company. He also demonstrated a thorough knowledge of both the Inca Trail and all the visits to the Inca heritage we made. The organization was impeccable. There was not a single failure in the three days: absolute punctuality, well selected hotels, managed tickets without any problems... Everything worked perfectly.
