Inca trail bathrooms

The Peruvian government has installed bathrooms along the Inca Trail. Previously, people would go wherever they wanted, which resulted in an unsanitary environment. On the first day of the 4-day Inca Trail hike, the bathrooms are relatively clean and well-maintained as they are owned by local communities. However, as you progress further along the trail, the quality of the bathrooms tends to deteriorate quickly. Here is everything you should know about using the potty during your Inca Trail trek.

Things to know

  • Some outhouse is situated in the middle of a rocky field that takes around 5 minutes to reach. The field has uneven terrain with piles and ruts, making it a challenge to navigate in the darkness.
  • You will need to bring your own light source if you plan on using the toilets after dark.
  • The toilets on the Inca Trail are not the typical seated variety, but rather floor toilets that require a squatting position.
  • Restrooms on the Inca Trail may not have any lighting, so it’s a good idea to bring a headlamp or flashlight.
  • While some travel companies may provide portable toilets at campsites, squat toilets are still the norm along the trail.
  • During nighttime visits, don’t be surprised if you encounter some quarter-sized spiders lurking around.
  • There are no toilets available at the Dead Woman Pass. You will need to find a spot in nature to relieve yourself.

Toilet paper

It’s important to keep in mind that in Peru and other South American countries, it’s customary to dispose of toilet paper in a bin rather than flushing it down the toilet. This applies to all types of restrooms, including those found in hotels and restaurants. This practice helps to prevent clogging and other plumbing issues.

Inca trail toilet locations

As you trek along the Inca Trail, you will find occasional toilet blocks scattered along the way, discreetly tucked away from the trail. However, they are not very common, so if you’re in urgent need, your only option will be to relieve yourself behind a bush. Most camping sites offer some type of restroom facility, but the quality may vary.

Inca trail toilet quality

Unfortunately, when it comes to the Inca Trail toilets, the news isn’t great. Privacy, hygiene, and cleanliness are not guaranteed. By day two, you’ll be using floor toilets where you need to squat, and the flushing mechanism often fails. It’s best to wear your hiking boots when using the toilets. Always bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. A headlamp is also recommended as there are no lights inside most toilet blocks.

What if you need to do more than #1 on the trail?

When nature calls and a toilet is not nearby, your guide can help you find a secluded spot away from the trail. To minimize your impact, make sure to dig a hole and cover your deposit with organic material or rocks to “leave no trace.” It’s important to do your part in preserving the natural beauty of the trail.

Are there restroom facilities accessible for women in the area?

There are designated bathrooms for men and women, but practically speaking, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between the men’s and women’s bathrooms on the trail.

How to pee at night on the 4-day Inca trail hike

When camping in cold weather, you have several options to avoid a long walk in the dark:

  • If there is a toilet in the campsite, you can venture out, though it may be far.
  • If your tour operator provides a private “pee tent,” you can use that.
  • An alternative is to bring an empty container with a secure lid to use inside your tent as a makeshift chamber pot.
  • Lastly, you can find a private spot in the bushes near your tent.

When hiking, how can women dispose of their hygiene products?

It’s recommended to carry multiple resealable plastic bags. Store used hygiene products in these bags and carry them out with you until you reach a hotel or public restroom where you can properly dispose of them.

Inca trail toilets – Portable option

It’s highly advisable to hire a tour company that offers a portable toilet tent. These are carried by porters, ensuring they are clean and used only by your group. This provides privacy and a comfortable seat, which is a major benefit compared to the public squat toilets.
