We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 a.m. and drive for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes to Ollantaytambo. The road is fully paved, and along the way, you will witness the transition of landscapes from the high plateau to the fertile Sacred Valley. From Ollantaytambo, we will continue driving on an unpaved road for about one hour until we reach the community of Patacancha. Upon our arrival in Patacancha, the local community will warmly welcome us and offer a typical breakfast. Afterward, they will share insights into their daily life and culture in their native Quechua language, while our guide provides translations and detailed explanations. You will then have the opportunity to participate in traditional farming activities using ancestral tools and learn about the art of textile weaving, a skill deeply rooted in their traditions.
Following this cultural experience, we will enjoy a delicious traditional lunch prepared by the community. In the afternoon, we will return by van to Ollantaytambo, a drive of approximately one hour, where we will board the 3:37 p.m. train to Aguas Calientes. We will arrive around 5:00 p.m. and check into a comfortable three-star hotel for an overnight stay.

Early in the morning, our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Aguas Calientes. Together, you will board the bus that takes you up to the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. The bus ride lasts approximately 25 minutes, offering stunning views of the lush cloud forest surrounding the site. Upon arrival at the Machu Picchu checkpoint, you will present your entrance tickets and passports before entering the sanctuary.
Your guided tour begins at the upper viewpoint of Machu Picchu, the perfect spot to capture the iconic panoramic photograph. Afterwards, you will descend to the lower section of the citadel to explore the main temples, ceremonial areas, terraces, and residential compounds, all while learning about the daily life and spiritual beliefs of the Incas.
After completing the guided visit, you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time for lunch (not included). FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the village of Patacancha a “tourist attraction” or a real community?
The village of Patacancha is a living Andean community, populated by families who speak the Quechua language and have maintained their traditions for centuries. It is not a staged tourist attraction: it is their home, their place of learning, their crops. AB Expeditions only facilitates a respectful encounter, with their permission and active participation.
How does AB Expeditions ensure that my visit is not invasive?
We work directly with the community, not with intermediaries. They define the boundaries, activities, and schedules. We only accept small groups (max. 8 people), and our guide moderates all interaction to ensure mutual respect.
Can I take photos of people in Patacancha?
Yes, but only with explicit permission. Before taking out your camera, ask for permission with a smile or through your guide. Many residents, especially the elderly, prefer not to be photographed. If they say yes, thank them. And if you can, send us the photos afterwards—we love to print copies and deliver them on future visits.
What should I do (or not do) to be a respectful visitor?
- Do: Greet people in Quechua (“Allillanchu” = How are you? or Hello), listen more than you talk, accept the food they offer you (even if it’s just a sip), and thank them humbly.
- Don’t: Touch objects without permission, use patronizing language (“how nice that you live like this!”), or give money directly to children (this encourages begging). Instead, support organized community projects.
Does my presence really help the community?
Yes. Your visit generates direct income that finances:
- Maintenance of the community weaving workshop
- Purchase of native seeds for ancestral agriculture
- School supplies for children In addition, by valuing their culture, you reinforce their pride in their identity—something as valuable as money.
Do they speak Spanish in Patacancha?
Many older adults only speak Quechua, but you can also find people who speak very basic Spanish, which makes it a very immersive experience. Your guide will not only translate, but also provide context: explaining the spiritual meaning of their crafts, the Andean agricultural cycle, and the role of women in the community. That way, you will understand beyond words.
Can I bring a gift for the community?
Yes, but with intention, not on impulse. Something you appreciate doing:
Here are some options.
- Coca leaves (a symbol of respect in the communities)
- Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, etc.)
- School supplies (notebooks, pencils, crayons, etc.)
Note: Avoid used clothing, candy, or cash. If you want to donate something larger, talk to us: we will coordinate with the community board to make sure it is useful and sustainable.
Is it safe to visit Patacancha?
It is completely safe. It is a loving and trustworthy community that welcomes visitors with whom they have built a relationship of trust over the years. In addition, your guide from AB Expeditions will always accompany you.
What Circuit Will Your Machu Picchu + Experiential Tourism Tour Follow?
At AB Expeditions, we always choose the best circuit available for our Patacancha and Machu Picchu tour. This means that, accompanied by your guide, you will visit both the upper and lower parts of the Inca City. This tour is designed to show you the most important temples, agricultural terraces, and the most impressive panoramic viewpoints of Machu Picchu.

To apply the discount, send us a copy of your passport and student ID card at the time of booking to: info@abexpeditions.com.
May I Change The Departure Date After The Permits Have Been Purchased?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the departure date. The Machu Picchu ticket is non-transferable, and we cannot modify it for a different date. The only way to change your departure date is by purchasing a new Machu Picchu permit for your desired date. Before making any changes, we must first check the availability of Machu Picchu tickets.
I see on the official website that Circuit 2 tickets are not available anymore for my preferred date. Is there any way you can still arrange my trip with Circuit 2?
Unfortunately, no. We also purchase tickets directly from the official website of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, so we cannot access sold-out tickets.
However, in those cases, we will offer you the best available alternative according to current regulations. Our commitment is that, regardless of the circuit, your visit to Machu Picchu will be complete, safe, and memorable.
Which Train Company Is Included In The Standard Package — PeruRail Or IncaRail?
Our standard package includes PeruRail, as it offers more daily frequencies, giving us greater flexibility to adjust schedules and minimize delays.
Although its fare is slightly higher, its punctuality, reliability, and resilience to unforeseen events (such as strikes or weather) make it the best option to ensure a smooth experience. In the event of disruptions, PeruRail is usually the first to resume operations.
In Your Experiential Tourism and Machu Picchu Package, Is the Expedition or Vistadome Class Included?
Our standard tour includes PeruRail’s Expedition Class, ideal for enjoying the scenery in basic comfort.
But if you’re looking for a more premium experience, you can upgrade your ticket to the Vistadome or Vistadome Observatory, which offer:
- Larger panoramic windows

When booking on our platform, you can select and pay for this upgrade based on your preferences.
Do I Need to Bring My Original Passport on the Machu Picchu & Experiential tourism 2-Day Tour?
Yes, absolutely! You must bring your original passport, which must be the exact one you sent us when booking.
It will be checked twice: upon boarding the train and upon entering Machu Picchu. Without it, you will not be able to continue on the tour.

Schedules depend on availability, but normally:

Of course! If you book your own accommodation in Aguas Calientes, we will reduce the tour price by $40 per person.
Just let us know where you will be staying so that our guide can take you there directly upon arrival.
Can I Store My Luggage At Your Office?
Absolutely! We offer free luggage storage.
On Day 1, when we pick you up in Cusco, give your large suitcases to our driver. He will take them back to our office in Cusco and store them safely.

Our maps of the tour
We organize our 4-day Inca Trail trek with two campsite options, A and B. The option we book depends on availability. In option A, the campsites are Wayllabamba, Pacaymayo, and Wiñaywayna. The first map on the left shows a general route, and the two maps on the right show the elevation profiles for options A and B of the 4-day Inca Trail.
