Where Are The Rainbow Mountains In Peru?
Firstly it’s important to know that there is more than one of these impressive Rainbow Mountains in Peru, with a total of 3 now having been discovered. Vinicunca which was the first to be found and remains the most popular to visit, and more recently followed by those of Palcoyo and Pallay Punchu.
All of these multicoloured peaks are found within the Cusco region up in the Andes Mountains, and in a very particular area too. This is because these lands are filled with many rich minerals such as Copper, Sulphur and Iron (which all give a distinct color), and also due to tectonic activity which forced these formations upwards out of the ground.
Your Different Rainbow Mountain Choices In Peru
Below let’s take a look at the three different Rainbow Mountains you can choose from, and which one may be best for you.
Vinicunca (The Most Iconic)
The original and first Rainbow Mountain to be found, Vinicunca is arguably one of the most popular destinations to visit in Peru nowadays, and especially when heading on a day tour from Cusco. This single peak has many bright and brilliant colours, which can best be seen during the dry season months (between May and September). The hike up to this mountain is the most difficult of the three, given it will take an hour and also as we will be up at an altitude of 5036m. However there are mules and quad bikes which you can pay for to make the journey up easier if you wish.
Palcoyo (Three Mountains In One)
Located in a different region away from Vinicunca, Palcoyo is less popular and thus perfect for those who don’t want to jostle with crowds for photos. Once you arrive at the site entrance, you’ll actually have a choice of three different Rainbow-coloured peaks to explore – all within just one area! Although they are slightly further away from the viewing platforms, you can still take some really awesome photos when heading on a day tour here. Palcoyo is also arguably the best option for those visiting Cusco in the shoulder or wet seasons, given there is the best chance that at least one of the mountains won’t be covered in snow (versus the single peaks of Vinicunca and Pallay Punchu).
Pallay Punchu (The Best For An Adventure)
This incredible mountain has a more otherworldly shape and feel to it, and is the best option for those who want a real adventure. Pallay Punchu is actually a multi-colored giant shard that rises high up out of the ground, and as such has a much more dramatic formation which is perfect for photos. Given it’s so new, not many tourists not know about it – making it perfect to head on a day tour now to experience this wonder without any other crowds around. The altitude is also lower at 4700m, making it a more forgiving hike than the other two.
