Difference Between Route 2A and Route 2B at Machu Picchu

Since the visitor system at Machu Picchu was reorganized into official circuits, travelers must now follow a designated route during their visit. This system helps protect the archaeological site while improving visitor flow throughout the citadel. As a result, visitors arriving by different travel styles—such as those hiking the Inca Trail 4 Days or those reaching the sanctuary by train—may be assigned different circuits. Among the available options, Circuit 2 is widely considered the most complete visit because it allows travelers to explore many of the most important areas of the ancient city. Within this circuit, visitors can choose between two routes: Route 2A and Route 2B. Understanding the difference between them can help you decide which ticket to book.

What Is the Main Difference Between Route 2A and Route 2B?

In practice, the difference between Route 2A and Route 2B is very small. Both routes follow almost the same path through the archaeological complex and include visits to the principal sectors of the Inca citadel. Travelers walking either route will explore the main terraces, urban areas, temples, and viewpoints that make the site so remarkable.

The only notable distinction is that Route 2B includes one additional terrace above the main path. By climbing this extra terrace, visitors gain access to a slightly higher viewpoint, which provides another excellent perspective of the citadel and surrounding mountains. From this vantage point, it is possible to take classic panoramic photographs of Machu Picchu and enjoy a broader view of the historic sanctuary.

Aside from this extra terrace and viewpoint, the rest of the experience is essentially identical. Both routes allow visitors to see the same archaeological sectors and follow a similar walking route through the ancient Inca city.

Availability of Route 2A and Route 2B Tickets

Another important difference between the two routes relates to ticket availability. In general, Route 2B tickets tend to sell out faster than Route 2A tickets. This occurs because many travelers prefer the additional viewpoint offered by Route 2B, even though the difference is minimal.

For this reason, visitors planning their trip to Machu Picchu often reserve Route 2B first. As demand increases during the high travel season, this route is usually the first option to become unavailable.

Which Route Is Recommended?

Both Route 2A and Route 2B provide an excellent visit and a comprehensive experience inside Machu Picchu. Since the paths are almost identical, travelers who choose either option will still enjoy one of the most complete tours of the archaeological site.

However, if both routes are available at the time of booking, Route 2B is often recommended. The additional terrace offers a slightly higher viewpoint, which many visitors appreciate for photography and panoramic views of the citadel.

When Should You Book Circuit 2 Tickets?

Due to the high demand for Circuit 2, it is strongly recommended to reserve tickets well in advance. Travelers planning to visit Machu Picchu should ideally book their tickets five to six months before their travel date. Early booking significantly increases the chances of securing the preferred route, especially Route 2B, which tends to sell out quickly.

Planning ahead ensures a smoother travel experience and guarantees access to one of the most popular and rewarding circuits inside the historic Inca sanctuary.

Which route is less crowded?

At the moment, there is no strict control distinguishing between Route 2A and Route 2B during ticket checks. Guards usually verify that visitors are following the correct circuit, but they do not always check the specific route. Because of this, many travelers naturally move toward Route 2B, which includes the well-known upper viewpoint area. As a result, Route 2B tends to be more crowded, while Route 2A is generally less busy and can provide a slightly quieter experience inside Machu Picchu.

Can I climb to the Route 2B upper terrace with a Route 2A ticket?

Yes, at the moment it is still possible to access the Route 2B upper terrace viewpoint with a Route 2A ticket. Since the control between these two routes is not yet strictly enforced, some visitors are able to move between them. However, this situation may change in the future.

During the low season, restrictions are usually lighter because the number of visitors at the Inca site is lower. In contrast, stricter control is expected during the high season, which generally begins in May, when visitor numbers increase significantly.

The guides from AB Expeditions constantly monitor any operational changes at the site and will inform us immediately if new restrictions are implemented. This information was last updated on March 4th, 2026.
