Environmental & Social Responsibility In Inca Trail Peru

In 2023, the effects of global warming were keenly felt in the Cusco region, leading to a significant shortage of water in many areas. This scarcity of water had a direct impact on the flora along the iconic Inca Trail, a cherished historical and natural treasure. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Sernamp, the institution entrusted with the preservation of the Inca Trail, called upon all companies operating along the trail to participate in a collective effort to address the issue. In response to this call for action, a team from AB Expeditions, consisting of four dedicated members, embarked on a mission to help irrigate the plants along the Inca Trail.

The Itinerary

Their journey began at 4 am in Cusco, where they gathered before setting off on their transportation to Ollantaytambo. From there, they boarded a train bound for kilometer 88, the starting point of the renowned five-day trek along the Inca Trail.

After fortifying themselves with breakfast, the team commenced their hike towards the Marchu Kente Inca site, a journey that took them approximately one hour and ten minutes. Upon reaching their destination, they sourced water from a nearby spring and then trekked for about thirty minutes uphill to reach the plants in need of irrigation. Despite the physical demands of the task, the team diligently worked to hydrate the vegetation, recognizing the vital role these plants play in preserving the ecological balance of the trail.

By the time their efforts concluded around 2 pm, the team members found themselves exhausted yet gratified by the impact of their work. With hunger gnawing at their stomachs, they retraced their steps back to kilometer 88, where they enjoyed a well-deserved lunch. From there, they embarked on the return journey, taking the train back to Ollantaytambo before finally traveling by van back to Cusco.

Through their laborious yet rewarding expedition, the AB Expeditions team demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Their actions not only helped mitigate the immediate effects of water scarcity on the Inca Trail’s flora but also served as a testament to the power of collective action in confronting the challenges posed by climate change.
