MACHU PICCHU SACRED VALLEY ITINERARY

Day 1: Sacred Valley Tour

Sacred Valley is a vast valley where there are a lot of tourist attractions. One day is not enough to visit all of them, that’s why we have split it into 2 options to visit it properly. Any of these options start at 7:00 am at your hotel in Cusco. See the options below and let us know which option you want:

  • Option A: By Pisac(Alpaca farm, Pisac ruins, Pisac Market, and Ollantaytambo).

We will pick you up from the lobby of your hotel in Cusco at 7:00 a.m. to begin your Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley tour. Our first drive will be approximately 15 minutes to Manos de la Comunidad, which is our initial stop. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe native camelids such as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, visit a textile center, and see guinea pigs. We will spend approximately 40 minutes at this location.

Following this, we will continue driving for about 30 minutes to the Taray viewpoint. At this stop, we will spend around 15 minutes enjoying breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River, as well as receiving an introduction to the cultural and historical significance of the Sacred Valley.

Next, we will proceed with a 45-minute drive to Pisac. Upon arrival, we will explore the archaeological site for approximately one hour and ten minutes, visiting the most important and notable areas.

At 11:10 a.m., we will depart from the Pisac Inca site and drive about 20 minutes to Pisac town, where we will spend around 30 minutes exploring the vibrant Pisac market. Afterward, we will drive for approximately 50 minutes to Urubamba, where we will enjoy lunch for about 40 minutes. Following lunch, we will continue with a 30-minute drive to Ollantaytambo, arriving around 2:00 p.m.

We will then explore the Ollantaytambo Inca site for about one hour before proceeding to the train station, which is a short five-minute drive away. We will board the train to Aguas Calientes at 3:37 p.m. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes around 5:00 p.m., we will check in at the hotel. You will have your dinner, and you will stay overnight in Aguas Calientes.

Note: The timing may vary slightly depending on where we spend more time

  • Option B: By Maras( Chinchero, Moray, Salt Ponds, and Ollantaytambo).

On this option, we will begin by picking you up from your hotel at 7:00 AM. From there, we will drive approximately 50 minutes to the town of Chinchero, where we will spend around 1 hour and 10 minutes visiting the renowned textile center. During this time, you will have the opportunity to observe traditional weaving techniques and see local animals such as llamas, alpacas, and guinea pigs. We will also explore the Inca archaeological site of Chinchero.

Following our visit, we will continue our journey with a 40-minute drive to the Salt Mines of Maras, arriving at approximately 10:00 AM. We will spend about 45 minutes exploring this unique and historical site, known for its impressive salt terraces.

Next, we will travel 35 minutes to Moray, an important Inca site famous for its circular agricultural terraces. Here, we will spend around 40 minutes with our guide, learning about its historical and agricultural significance. After the visit to Moray, we will drive about 40 minutes to the town of Urubamba, where we are scheduled to arrive at the restaurant at approximately 12:40 PM. You will have 40 minutes to enjoy lunch.

Following lunch, we will continue with a 30-minute drive to Ollantaytambo, arriving around 2:00 PM. At this site, we will explore for about 1 hour, visiting the Temple of the Sun, agricultural terraces, water fountains, and other key features of this important Inca site. After the tour, we will drive 5 minutes to the Ollantaytambo Train Station, where we will board the train to Aguas Calientes at 3:37 PM. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes at approximately 5:00 PM, we will proceed to check in at our hotel and spend the night.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Things To Know

  • It is recommended to book the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour at least three months in advance during the high season (May to August) in order to secure Circuit 2, which is one of the most popular routes for visiting Machu Picchu. For the shoulder season (April, September, October, and November), it is advisable to make your reservation at least two months in advance to ensure availability for Circuit 2. Even during the low season (December, January, and February), it is still necessary to book at least two months in advance to access Circuit 2. Despite lower tourist numbers during this period, availability can still be limited, and advance planning is strongly recommended.
  • When joining our 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour, it is essential to bring your original passport, as it is required for entry to the Machu Picchu Citadel and for boarding the train.
  • If you make a last-minute booking, we will adjust your tour to the 2-day Machu Picchu itinerary. As part of this arrangement, we will take you to Aguas Calientes to purchase one of the 1,000 tickets available in the town.

Recommendations

  • It is recommended to bring a strong insect repellent, as you are likely to encounter mosquitoes in Machu Picchu. There are also mosquitoes in the Sacred Valley, although they are generally fewer and found only in certain areas.
  • Training shoes or lightweight walking shoes with good tranction are highly recommended because in sacred valley and machu picchu the path is not flat, you will walk in dirt path and stones paves Trail.
  • Training shoes or lightweight walking shoes with good traction are highly recommended, as the terrain in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu is uneven. You will be walking on dirt paths and stone-paved trails.

Booking Confirmation

Once we receive your booking, we will check the availability of Machu Picchu tickets. If available, we will proceed to purchase your Machu Picchu ticket with Circuit 2. Within 24 hours, we will send you a confirmation along with a manual to the email address you used when booking your trip. At that point, your trip will be 100% confirmed.

In the event that Circuit 2 is sold out for your preferred date, we will send you an email offering the option to purchase an additional ticket to visit Machu Picchu. This means you would need to pay an additional $45 USD for the extra ticket. Consequently, the total price will increase from $440 USD to $485 USD. Our plan would be to purchase Circuit 3 from the regular ticket packages, and with the additional $45, we would also acquire a ticket for Circuit 1. This way, Circuit 1 will allow you to take the classic photo of Machu Picchu, while Circuit 3 provides access to the actual citadel.

In the event that there are no Machu Picchu tickets available online for your desired date, we will propose adjusting your trip to a two-day Machu Picchu tour. The price for this option will be $370 per person. This arrangement allows us to purchase tickets from the 1,000 available in the town of Aguas Calientes. The itinerary for this two-day tour will be as follows: We will pick you up at 3:00 AM from Cusco and transport you to Ollantaytambo, where you will board the first train at 5:05 AM. Upon arrival, you will proceed directly to the Machu Picchu ticket office to obtain a queue ticket. In the afternoon, we will return to the Machu Picchu ticket office to purchase your Machu Picchu ticket for the following day.

Extra Belongings

It’s not recommended to bring large luggage because the train only allows 8 kilograms. If you have bigger bags, you might end up paying a lot. We suggest leaving extra belongings at your hotel in Cusco if you’re returning to the same place. Just bring what you need for your stay in Aguas Calientes, as it’s only for two days and one night.

If you’re staying at a different hotel after visiting Machu Picchu, you can store your extra belongings with us for free. When the guide picks you up for the Sacred Valley tour, give your extra items to our driver, who will take them back to Cusco and store them. When you return from Machu Picchu, our team will deliver your belongings and drop you off at your hotel.

Bathroom

When visiting the Sacred Valley, you will find restrooms available at every Inca site you visit. However, on the second day, during your visit to Machu Picchu, please be advised that there are no bathrooms or food stalls within the archaeological site itself. Therefore, it is essential to use the restroom before entering. The facilities are located directly in front of the entrance and require a fee of two soles.

Mistake

If it is cloudy and rainy you will leave the viewing platform where the most classic photos are taken and start the tour around Machu Picchu, with the hope of coming back when the weather improves, we would like to inform you that this is impossible. Once you are on the trail you only have to move forward and follow the circuit – there are many guards with whistles watching, and you won’t stand a chance.

Food and Water

During the first day of your visit to the Sacred Valley, you will encounter numerous shops in various locations where you can purchase snacks and bottled water to ensure you stay nourished and hydrated. Lunch is not included in the tour; however, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a meal at a restaurant in Urubamba.

On the second day, during your visit to Machu Picchu, please be aware that food is not permitted inside the archaeological site. Therefore, you are advised to consume your snacks before entering. Alternatively, there are designated areas outside the entrance of Machu Picchu where you can sit and eat. These areas also feature shops that sell coffee and sandwiches, though prices may be higher than average. After completing your tour, you may choose to have lunch in Aguas Calientes at a restaurant of your preference.

As for water, it is recommended to bring a bottle with you from Aguas Calientes. If you forget, there are vendors located outside the entrance to Machu Picchu where you can purchase bottled water.

Prohibited objects inside Machu Picchu

  • Walking sticks are not allowed unless the person needs them.
  • It is not allowed to enter Machu Picchu with drones, hiking poles, tripods, or selfie sticks as well. Older people can carry a cane, but with a rubber tip, not a metal one.
  • Professional cameras are not allowed. Permits for professional cameras are over $300 so avoid bringing a professional-looking camera in to save some money.
  • You cannot enter Machu Picchu with your travel backpack. Only smaller models are allowed so leave your backpack in Aguas Calientes in your Hotel.

Strikes

Strikes and roadblocks are frequent in Peru and can disrupt our Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu 2-day Tour, and rail service to and from Machu Picchu. We will do our best that your visit to Machu Picchu continues as planned with some changes.

If the strike happens on the first day of your Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu tour, we will take you to Aguas Calientes the night before your start date. You will spend the night in a hotel which will be at your expense. And the next day, you will visit Machu Pichu normally.

If the strike happens on the second day. We will send our vans to Hidrolectrica. So you will need to hike an extra 3 hours from Aguas Calientes to Hydroelectric. Then we will drive 7 hours to Cusco. We will drop you off at your hotel around 09:00 pm.

Travel Insurance

We recommend you get travel insurance. If you cancel your Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu tour at the last minute it can reimburse you for your pre-paid, non-refundable Machu Picchu permit. Also when you get sick or hurt while you are far away from home, it can reimburse you for care following a covered medical emergency while traveling.

Machu Picchu Weather

The weather is unpredictable in the Andes. The dry season in Machu Picchu is from April to October and the rainy season is from November through March, but this does not stop rain from falling in the dry season or the sun from coming out in the rainy season so just be prepared. No matter what season you are visiting Machu Picchu, make sure that you get rain gear such as a rain jacket, rain pants, and rain poncho. You might experience 4 seasons in only one day too. So you must be prepared. Layers are the key since they are easy to adapt to different temperature changes.

  • As per the new rules, you can stay in the Machu Picchu area for only 2 hours, but it is almost impossible to enforce this rule unless visitors would have been all the time harassed by guards who would have to ask them over and over again what time did they enter (this rule should be more strict).
  • With the standard entry ticket to Machu Picchu, you will not be allowed back in after you exit, even if you do not spend the full 2 hours allotted with each ticket. A complete guided tour only tends to last between 2 to 3 hours.
  • With the Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain ticket, You should hike first to the Mountain and then do the guided tour at Machu Picchu following circuit 03.
  • Be careful with selfie-and-jumping pictures, as these cause most of the accidents in the mountains.
