Rainbow mountain China vs Peru

Around the world, we have many beautiful places and natural wonders, but unfortunately, we would never have enough time to visit all of them. It is such a great thing to have places like Rainbow Mountain in Peru, and halfway on the other side of the world in China, there is another Rainbow Mountain. Let’s talk briefly about Rainbow mountain China vs Peru, see the similarities they share, things that make them unique, and most importantly, things to know before visiting.

Location

Rainbow mountain China

It is located about 40 km from Zhangye city in Gansu province, China, at the eastern foothill of the Qilian Mountain Range. Known as Zhangye Danxia Geopark, it became a national geopark and World Heritage Site in 2009.

Rainbow mountain Peru

It is located about 125 km southeast of Cusco city, out in the Vilcanota mountain range. It gained widespread popularity around 2015.

Formation

The colorful landscapes were created when tectonic plates collided at least 55 million years ago. For the Rainbow Mountain Peru, its origins date back to the formation of the Andes mountain range. The same geological formation originated the Rainbow Mountain China with the Indian Plate colliding into the Eurasian Plate. The erosion from rainwater, wind, and sunshine has molded these stunning formations over millennia.

How to get and accessibility?

Rainbow mountain China

A public bus or taxi gets you straight to the tourist service center within a one-hour drive from Zhangye city. Inside, shuttle buses drive from one scenic spot to another, so walking isn’t strenuous compared to the Peruvian site.

Rainbow mountain Peru

The full-day tour involves a six-hour walk round trip, plus a six-hour drive in total. This makes it difficult to catch the sunrise or sunset unless you take a 2 day Rainbow mountain hike with an overnight camp.

How is the trail?

Rainbow mountain China

The Chinese government has installed paved and wooden boardwalks throughout the park. Some sections are level, making it accessible to wheelchairs and travelers with physical challenges. Shuttle buses get you close to the main views.

Rainbow mountain Peru

The trail is carved out of hard-packed terrain, dusty in winter and muddy in summer. Approaching the vantage point, you walk a steep section of stairs. Wheelchair access does not exist due to topography, but horse rentals are available for those who need help with the elevation.

Things to do

Rainbow mountain China

Visitors can take a photoshoot with camels or even ride them. Stunning aerial views are available via hot air balloons or powered paragliders. Folk arts and performances are also hosted in the afternoon hours.

Rainbow mountain Peru

There is an extra one-mile hike to the Red Valley. Locals offer crafts made of alpaca wool and serve hot coca tea. Photoshoots with alpacas are very common along the trail.

Scenic spots

Rainbow mountain China

There are four distinct viewpoints overlooking the topography. Busses transport tourists between them. The highest point is about 5,900 feet, making it much lower and easier to access than the Peruvian mountain.

Rainbow mountain Peru

There is only one main lookout at an elevation of 16,500 feet. Nearly all the famous social media photos of this mountain are taken from this single, high-altitude vantage point.

Entrance fee

Rainbow mountain China

Tickets are available at the service center without advance booking. There is a senior discount for visitors over 60 years old.

Rainbow mountain Peru

There is a control station before the parking lot where every group pays for permits. Tickets are unlimited, but no senior discounts are provided.

Whichever Rainbow Mountain you decide to visit, reaching the summit is a unique experience that connects you with the history of our planet.
