Is It Worth Visiting Peru In June?
Quick Answer: June is perfect for those who are looking for the classic experience traveling around the country.
Although Peru in May marked the start of the dry season, there is still potential for uncommon light showers in the early weeks. However June really is dry, and this is especially felt in the Andes. This region becomes a wonderland for hiking, where clear blue skies will lead the way on famous treks like the Inca Trail, Ausangate Trek and the path up to Rainbow Mountain. It’s also an ideal time to explore the Amazon Jungle where rainfall is at its lowest.
It’s important to know that June does mark the start of Peru’s high tourist season, given it’s when summer holidays usually begin around Europe and in North America. As a result destinations like Cusco and Lima can get quite crowded – although the first week or two will be overall quieter compared to the end of the month. Those looking to hike the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu trek will need to book at least a few months in advance to guarantee their spot and preferred camping locations.
Important Things To Know:
- June has very dry weather across the country, and is a great time to go hiking.
- The high tourist season begins in June, so prices can start to creep up in the latter few weeks for accommodation and flights.
- Temperatures get a lot cooler in June, which is especially felt in the high altitude Andes regions.
The Pros Of Visiting Peru In June:
- Rainfall is at its lowest this time of year, making for ideal hiking conditions in the Andes and Amazon Jungle regions.
- Major destinations like Cusco and Lima will have a more festive atmosphere given higher tourist numbers and local festivals.
- It’s easier to spot rare wildlife in the Amazon due to shrunken riverbanks, such as Jaguars and Tapir.
The Cons Of Visiting Peru In June:
- Temperatures start dropping rapidly in June for Peru, which whilst still fine along the coast, can get quite chilly in the Andes.
- Prices start to increase as we get into the busier high season for Peru.
Everything You Need To Know About Visiting Peru In June
Below we’ll now explore what Peru in June is like. This includes what the weather will be like, the best things to do during this month as well as a solid Peru packing list for June.
Best Things To Do In Peru In June
One of the best things to do in June is to head to Cusco for both hiking and local festivities. The conditions for trekking around the Andes will be perfect, with treks like the legendary four day Inca Trail and Ausangate Trek amongst the very best (especially in the first couple of weeks where there are less crowds). On the 24th June we can also enjoy the Inti Raymi festival in Cusco – which is the annual event that celebrates the Inca culture who once thrived in this region.
After visiting Cusco, we highly recommend heading to the Amazon Jungle (Manu and Tambopata are the closest to the city, whilst you can also fly to Iquitos). Rainfall levels will be much lower, making jungle treks on foot more accessible. River levels will also be much lower, with the newly-exposed banks the perfect place to spot rare animals such as the elusive Jaguar.
The Weather Of Peru In June
Marking the winter season for Peru, here in June we can expect some more changes compared with the previous months of the year.
Temperatures continue to reduce around the country, which is felt most in the Andes regions. Whilst daytime highs will still be nice and warm (especially as there is no rain and little clouds), it will rapidly drop during the evening so be sure to have several layers ready. It’s a similar yet less extreme case for the coastal regions too, where you’ll need a jumper for the evenings (especially in Lima given its cooler microclimate this time of year).
Rainfall levels reach some of their very lowest here in June, which is great for those who want to head to the Amazon regions which will be more comfortable for jungle treks. This is also the same case with the Andes, making it a great time to go hiking around the regions of Cusco and Huaraz. It’s also pretty dry along the Pacific Coast too – so it’s safe to say you won’t be needing a poncho when coming to Peru in June unless going on deep jungle treks.
Packing List For Peru In June
Given how dry June is compared with previous months, what we need to bring will be slightly different from say January for Peru at the start of the year.
Most of the focus will instead be on bringing multiple layers rather than waterproofs, given temperatures can reach some of their overall coldest for the year here in Peru. Below we’ll share an ideal starting point for getting together your own Peru packing list.
- Thin layers (such as Shorts and T-Shirts).
- Swimming trunks / Bikini.
- A warm coat.
- Thick layers (several jumpers and sweaters are ideal – and be sure to bring multiple for treks in Cusco or Huaraz).
- Comfortable hiking boots for treks.
- A baseball cap or Andean hat to prevent getting burnt during the day.
- A hand towel.
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from harsh sun and glare (especially important in high altitude routes where the sun is more intense).
- High SPF sunscreen (we suggest using a minimum of SPF 30 when hiking).
- Be sure to bring a thick hat, scarf, and gloves for Andean hikes.
- Insect repellent.
- A reusable water bottle.
- A day pack to hold everything you need during your treks and day trips.
- A quality camera or mobile phone.
- Medication for personal use.
- Padlocks which you can use for your bags when on longer treks or on public transport.
- Charging adaptors and power banks.
- Extra batteries for your camera.
A Breakdown Of Peruvian Regions In June
Are you still wondering what each particular destination will be like in June? Although we can’t cover them all in just one post (there’s hundreds throughout Peru), below we’ll explore the main destinations and what to expect with each.
The Coastal Regions
Lima begins to get somewhat chilly come June, and especially in the evening where you may need a jumper or coat when heading out. During the day you may be fine if it’s sunny. Arequipa and Nazca are slightly more extreme examples of Lima, where daytimes will be nice and warm – however the nights will get quite cold so be prepared with several layers ready. June is a good time to visit Peru’s beaches further north, and especially those of Piura which have a more tropical climate rather than a desert climate (so both the daytime and evenings will remain warm). This includes destinations like Máncora, Punta Sal and Vichayito.
The Andes Regions
June marks the proper winter season for the Peruvian Andes, and as such we need to prepare properly. Whilst the daytime temperatures are still warm, during the nights it can become very cold quickly as the sun begins to set. Even in Cusco you’ll want several layers ready when heading around on the Cusco city tour, and perhaps a hat or gloves if you’re not great with the cold. If planning on trekking then you’ll need more layers given temperatures can often dip below freezing on the very high altitude treks (such as around Ausangate and Salkantay). Rainfall levels are now virtually nonexistent here in the Andes this month, which means perfect weather for heading outdoors and exploring the different regions here such as Cusco, Ayacucho and Huaraz.
The Amazon Jungle Regions
June also marks the official dry period for the Amazon Jungle across Peru, although rainfall can still of course be expected. This time of year is better for heading on walking-based tours of the rainforest, given paths won’t be muddy and there will be easier access to different jungle lodges and routes. Whilst boat travel will be limited to less deeper jungle areas than the wet season (given shrunken rivers), this will mean a better chance of seeing land animals. This includes Jaguars, Tapir and Capybara, who all flock to the newly-exposed river beds for feeding – where lots of other animal species also come.
Our Top Tips For Visiting Peru In June
Overall June is a fantastic time for the climate when travelling around Peru. As we have already seen in the previous section, it’s an optimal time to visit all of the different regions – just make sure to pack properly before your trip. This includes warm layers for the southern coastal regions at night, as well as multiple thicker layers for the Andes (and perhaps a few more if you’re planning on heading on high altitude treks). For the Amazon Jungle and north coastal regions, bring lots of short layers and mosquito repellant ready.
Now given this month marks the start of the busy tourist season, you may find that prices for flights and accommodation begin to rise quickly for June (especially when compared with April for Peru and the prior months). If possible, we suggest booking your trip for the first week or two if saving money is a priority for you. This is because the full summer season in other areas around the world hasn’t yet come into full swing – and as such we can take advantage here.
Finally, June marks a great month to visit Peru in order to experience various events and festivals. Inti Raymi lights up the whole of Cusco on the 24th June with various parades and dances, as we learn more about the historical significance of the Inca civilization here. Qoyllur Rit’i is another event here in Cusco which features a sacred pilgrimage through the Andes mountains, whilst all over Peru we can experience the catholic festivities of Corpus Christi.
