Inca Trail Video Recorded In October

Watch our video of the 4-day Inca Trail, filmed in late October. The footage was recorded from October 30th to November 2nd by our tour guide, Ricardo. The video illustrates the typical weather conditions in October, which often include a combination of rain, mist, and clear blue skies. As you will notice, the first afternoon brought rainfall, but the weather improved afterward. One of the unique features of this month is the mist that forms after the rain, giving the mountains a mystical and mysterious atmosphere.

Things to Know

  • Shoulder Season: October is considered a transitional month between the dry and rainy seasons. Temperatures are generally mild, with a combination of sunny days and occasional showers, creating balanced and pleasant trekking conditions.
  • Orchids and Seasonal Flora: As October falls within the Andean spring, you can observe blooming orchids and a wide variety of seasonal flowers along the trail, adding color and vitality to the landscape.
  • Crowds: The Inca Trail continues to operate at full capacity, so you will be hiking alongside many other travelers. However, at Machu Picchu, visitor numbers are slightly lower compared to the peak season (June to August).
  • Permits Sell Out in Advance: Although October is part of the shoulder season, its favorable weather—characterized by moderate temperatures and not heavy rainfall—makes it a popular choice. As a result, permits often sell out well in advance.
  • Excellent Photography Conditions: October offers excellent opportunities for photography. The combination of bright sunlight, occasional dramatic clouds, and lush green scenery creates ideal natural lighting conditions.
  • Unique Natural Sounds: A distinctive feature of October is the presence of small toads along sections of the Inca Trail. Their calls are especially noticeable after the second campsite, Pacaymayo, as you hike toward the second pass and continue to Phuyupatamarca, adding a unique and memorable auditory element to the journey.
  • End of the Dry Season: October is generally considered the final month of the dry season on the Inca Trail, just before the rainy season becomes more established in November.
  • Landscape Changes: With the first seasonal rains, the Inca Trail landscape gradually begins to turn greener, enhancing the scenic beauty of the route.

Weather and Trail Conditions

  • Rain: October marks the beginning of the rainy season; however, precipitation is neither constant nor particularly intense. Rainfall patterns are irregular, often alternating between several sunny days and short periods of rain. For example, it is common to experience five consecutive sunny days followed by one or two days of light rain, or even a full week of clear weather interrupted by brief showers. When rain does occur, it typically lasts only two to three hours rather than continuing throughout the day, and it is most frequent in the afternoon. Overall, sunny conditions still predominate over rainy periods.
  • Temperature: During October, daytime temperatures along the trail generally range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), providing comfortable conditions for trekking. Nights become cooler, particularly at higher-altitude campsites, though they are not as severe as during the peak winter months. Nighttime temperatures usually fall between 1°C and 7°C (34°F to 45°F). The lowest temperatures are typically experienced at the second campsite, located above 3,600 meters, where the higher elevation makes the cold more noticeable.
  • Visibility: Visibility in October remains generally favorable due to the predominance of sunny days. Clear conditions often allow for expansive views along the trail. Following rainfall or during the early morning hours, low clouds frequently rise and drift across the mountains, creating striking contrasts. These shifting clouds enhance the landscape, offering dramatic scenery and excellent opportunities for photography, particularly for capturing timelapse sequences.

Pros Of Hiking Inca Trail In October

  • Ideal Conditions for Time-Lapse Photography: October introduces the first rains along the Inca Trail, and with them come shifting cloud formations over the mountains. These dynamic skies, combined with brief and light showers, create excellent opportunities for capturing dramatic time-lapse sequences and atmospheric landscape photography, often enhanced by low-lying clouds.
  • Frequent and Vivid Rainbow Displays: The mix of intermittent rainfall and returning sunlight during October often results in beautiful rainbow formations. These natural displays add a striking and colorful element to the trekking experience.
  • Enhanced Wildlife Observation Opportunities: As spring begins in the Andes, vegetation starts to flourish, attracting a wide variety of wildlife. This period is particularly rewarding for nature enthusiasts, as some species enter their mating season, increasing the chances of sightings along the trail.
  • Mild and Comfortable Temperatures: As part of the shoulder season, October offers more moderate temperatures. Nights and early mornings are generally less cold than during the winter months, making camping and early departures more comfortable for hikers.
  • Transforming Mountain Landscapes: The initial rains gradually begin to change the scenery, especially in the highlands. The landscape transitions from dry, brown tones to fresh greens, creating a unique contrast of colors as vegetation regenerates, resulting in highly photogenic surroundings.
  • Blooming Flowers and Native Orchids: Spring brings renewed life to the trail, with a variety of flowers beginning to bloom. Native orchids and seasonal flora add vibrant colors and botanical richness throughout the route.
  • Natural Shade from Cloud Cover: Increased cloud presence and occasional mist provide natural shade during the day. This reduces direct sun exposure and contributes to more pleasant hiking conditions overall.
  • Increased Bird Activity: October offers a higher likelihood of spotting hummingbirds and other bird species, as they are attracted to the blooming flowers and abundant nectar sources along the trail.
  • Scenic Views Remain Impressive: Despite the onset of the rainy season, weather conditions still allow for clear views on many days. Trekkers can continue to enjoy spectacular scenery, including mountains, glaciers, and diverse Andean landscapes.

Cons of Hiking Inca Trail In October

  • Partial Cloud Cover During the Seasonal Transition: With the arrival of the first rains, mountain views may occasionally be affected by mist and low clouds, particularly on rainy days. This can reduce long-distance visibility along certain sections of the trail.
  • Possibility of Light Rain Showers: Although October is often considered part of the late dry season, light rainfall becomes more frequent. These showers are typically brief and less intense than in the peak rainy season; however, they can leave sections of the trail damp and slightly slippery, making proper rain gear essential.
  • Mist at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku): On rainy or overcast days, the area around Inti Punku can become enveloped in mist. In some cases, visibility of Machu Picchu may be temporarily limited, requiring patience until the clouds begin to clear.
  •  Increase in Mosquito Activity: As humidity levels rise with the onset of the rainy season, mosquito activity tends to increase. They are more noticeable in warmer and more humid sections of the trail.
  • Limited Availability of Permits: Despite being considered a shoulder-season month, October remains a popular time to hike the Inca Trail. Permits often sell out well in advance, and last-minute availability is typically very limited.
